Gym Etiquette 101
Check your ego at the door

Introduce yourself to newcomers
Most of us are really good at this at 4 Barrel. You should always view it as a duty to make sure that any new athlete feels welcome in your community. Say hello, introduce yourself and welcome them to the class. It can really intimidating visiting a new gym or being fresh out of 101.
Try to be on time
We all have busy lives and all we want to do to start or finish our day is get out WOD on. I totally get it. Being on time is mainly for your safety. We definitely don’t want yall to miss the huddle, but more importantly we want to be sure you get the proper warm up and are ready to start movement on time. When you are late we will NEVER punish you with burpees or lock the door. Be sure to check in with your coach and see if he or she wants you to do anything specific before jumping into class.
Be respectful when the coach is giving instruction
I know some of you have more experience than others but it doesn’t matter. It is disrespectful to the coach as well as to others to carry on your own private conversation or “do your own thing” when the coach is giving instruction. Some of you may know how to break down the workout in your head but not everyone does; be patient and quiet and let everyone get all of the information they need from the coach. Also, you may learn something new or miss a joke that was on you.
Respect an athlete’s space
This is very important for safety. We (coaches) are typically pretty good at making sure that class is set up well for safety and efficiency. But, always be aware of what is going on around you. If an athlete is setting up for a lift, don’t walk in front of or behind them, or anywhere close to them. Stop and wait for them to successfully or unsuccessfully perform the lift. If the athlete needs to bail and you’re in the danger zone around the athlete you could get seriously injured by the barbell. We would also hate to see another trip and fall on or over someone else’s equipment.
Avoid ghost riding
Ghost riding in CrossFit refers to the phenomenon of dropping barbells, kettlebells, duumbells etc. from over your head no matter how much it weighs or what the situation is. Although it is very satisfying to hear the crashing of the weights against the floor this is important to avoid because all of these things can and will bounce when dropped from overhead and could kick back into yourself or another athlete. It is also important to keep our equipment in good shape for the next 5 – 10 years.
Clean up your DNA
If you’ve sweat on, bled on or cried on (you all know you’ve done it), wipe it down; anything and everything. Besides being good practice to avoid spreading cooties it is respectful to the next class who will be using the equipment.
Be kind to your barbell
When you’re cleaning up and unloading your barbell you should strip off plates with proper midline alignment of course, but more importantly don’t just let the barbell crash on the floor when stripping plates off. You can strip it down to an easy deadlift weight then carefully slide the weights off either side from a standing position or, have a friend help you. Letting them crash on the floor is how they get damaged and they’re not cheap to replace.
Take your training seriously but don’t take yourself too seriously.
