Wod Results:

My first 5K after 3 months at Four Barrel Crossfit was cut by 3 minutes.

PR’s:

RXing an entire WOD was the best feeling ever. It’s a great accomplishment to lift more weight each time I come in.

Achievements because of CrossFit (mental & physical):

I feel the best about my body that I have since having kids, my baby “pooch” that I thought would never go away is gone. I can run stronger and go longer without loosing my breath or even when just chasing the kids around.

Why did you start CrossFit?:

My husband joined, so I did the open gym on Saturdays and got addicted. I could see major changes just in the few Saturdays of doing this style of workout. I was ready to change my workout routine, and I felt like I was accomplishing something. I became more toned and stronger in a feminine way.

I’ve always thought of exercise as something you do to burn calories. I’ve had the occasional “runners high” or endorphin driven high fives after a good spin class but I never really loved any of it. I did it because I loved to eat and I didn’t want to get fat. That strategy worked for a while but when I had four babies in four years, the “do it to be skinny” motivation lost it’s appeal. Sleepless nights, the stress of taking care of small children, and a difficult career left me stressed, tired, and about 50 pounds overweight.

After losing a lot of that weight by sheer force of will (calorie counting and running), I felt happy to be at a healthy weight but I was bored and hungry and knew the old habits would so easily return unless I found SOMETHING that I could enjoy for the long haul so I decided to give Four Barrel a try.

It is this amazing hour of my day where I can turn off my brain and just listen to my body. All the stresses of life are pushed away and for an hour there are no cell phones or computers or mirrors, and you can forget about everything except focusing your mind on the thing in front of you. It is so physically intense that you can’t do anything else except be present in that moment with that movement and your fellow athletes who are constantly supporting you and pushing you to your best. I cannot say enough about the community of athletes and how they support and encourage each other. Some of my “victories” at the gym are things that others have been doing easily for years, yet they are (almost) as excited as I am for each milestone because they were there with me the long weeks trying to achieve it. Exercise isn’t about “calories burned” to me any more. Exercise is about the excitement of challenging my body to see what new thing it can do next. Come check it out. You will not regret it.

Achievements because of CrossFit (mental & physical):

Four Barrel CrossFit has helped me to gain confidence in my physical abilities. It has motivated me to live a more health-oriented lifestyle consisting of good nutrition and challenging workouts in a friendly environment.

Why did you start CrossFit?:

I started Four Barrel Crossfit because I was bored and unsatisfied with my current workout routine and lifestyle. I was hoping to kick start my energy levels, improve my attitude, lower my body fat percentage, and live a healthier life. Four Barrel Crossfit has helped me achieve all of these. If I knew then what I know now, I would have joined long ago.

Achievements because of CrossFit (mental & physical):

Physically: In the 2 years before I joined CrossFit I had allowed my weight to creep up promising myself that I wouldn’t let it get to this number and then that number and finally saying, “I’m this big. Who cares? I will eat what I want.” That found me in the doctor’s office being told I was pre-diabetic, anemic, overweight. In addition stress fractures in my lumbar spine were hurting constantly and I was told I needed to have my spine fused.

The past 11 months have totally changed my health. I’ve lost about 40 lbs, went from a size 14 to a 2, and lost around 12% body fat. I was recently told that my dead lifting had strengthened my back so much the fractures were all but healed. All of my labs come back and now the doctor doesn’t just say, “…they look good or are normal..” she says they are the levels of an athlete. That is something I am very proud of and not something I ever imagined someone would say about me. Recently I had to take a pulmonary test and was told I was 1 second off of a 15 year record at Floyd Memorial Hospital for the best test ever. The test administrator point blank said that had to be a result of my training at CrossFit. In addition I have had my doctor tell me, “Your prescription is to go to CrossFit and keep doing what you are doing! It is working for your mind and body.” I also feel far less tired, stronger, healthier, and much younger than my age.

Mentally: Mentally I’m the strongest I have ever been. The past 6 years have been difficult to say the least. Before CrossFit I was existing, not living. I did everything for my daughter and I tried to help whoever I could but somehow I lost myself. CrossFit awakened a part of me that I thought I had lost. I focus on myself now too, not just my daughter or others. I have more confidence, and I’m a happier/more positive person by far. I have found when life gets tough now I automatically start coaching myself on how to get through it. I look for positives and ways to navigate through it. I pull deep inside and forge ahead. That skill comes from doing WODs and the overall CrossFit environment (whereas before I think I was so tired and felt that life was just the recovery from traumatic events). Now I look at life and I’m excited. I go after what I want. I’m living! CrossFit has allowed me to stop looking back and start looking forward and that’s an invaluable gift to someone in my position.

Achievements because of CrossFit (mental & physical):

CrossFit has taught me stop comparing myself to others. It’s’ not about the person that lifts more weight than me or works out more than me. It’s about me and what I’ve accomplished. Sure we all push each other to do better, but at the end of the day it’s about me doing my best and being stronger than I was yesterday. I have more confidence in myself now than I have ever had in my life. I am stronger physically, but more important, I am stronger mentally and emotionally. There have been days I literally wanted to cry through my workout, but I did it. I finished. This crosses over into the rest of my life. If I’m feeling defeated, I say to myself, “Hey, you did a full “Murph” (a very difficult workout), you can do anything.” All of this I have accomplished with my team at Four Barrel!

The coaches are amazing! The athletes are amazing!… There have been so many times I was the last one to finish a WOD and my coaches finished it with me and my teammates cheered me on. They do this, not because they have to, but because the care about me. It really is like a family.

Why did you start CrossFit?:

I was never a person that enjoyed working out. Actually I hated it. I needed to lose weight though, and my best friend kept talking to me about Four Barrel. I told her there was no way I could do anything like that, but after much convincing, I decided to go to one class to get her off my back. It was love at first site. I was hooked from that very first WOD. I had never worked so hard and felt so good. I needed this. So now, I never miss a Saturday and I do everything I can to get in 2 other days a week. Sometimes I feel bad that I don’t do more than just 3 days a week, but that’s 3 more days than I used to do. So if you are thinking of joining Four Barrel CrossFit, I highly recommend it. It will change your life in more ways than you ever expected. I love my box!

Achievements because of CrossFit (mental & physical):

I’ve lost 26lbs since beginning at Four Barrel Crossfit. Although I often wake up sore from the previous WOD, I never wake up with an aching back like I did on a daily basis prior to joining. Crossfit has gotten me back into exercises I haven’t done since playing Division I college football. I haven’t felt this good since my early 20’s. Running 1-4 miles is actually fun now, and not a nightmare.

Why did you start CrossFit?:

In my late 30’s I knew I was getting into a rut where I was just going through the motions in the big box gyms. I found it easier and easier to begin missing a workout here and there, and skipping important strength movements (squats, deadlifts, shoulder press, etc…). As a result my weight began to increase, and my fitness level declined rather rapidly. Having numerous knee surgeries and reconstruction in high school and college I knew I had to make a change for both my health and mobility as I become older. My cousin talked me into giving Four Barrel a try.

For the first month, I was nervous driving to the gym, and I knew I was going to be the worst performer at many of the workout elements. I signed my teenage son up to come with me at this same time. At this point, he was LOVING it everyday. I knew I had to stick with it for him, not to mention the fact of how close it has kept us as we accomplish things together! Now, six months later I’m not nervous, and I actually look forward to seeing what I can accomplish that day. In fact, we have made it a family affair as my wife joined 4 months ago, and is accomplishing things she never thought possible, and she is in the best shape of her life at 37 years old. If you’re considering Four Barrel CrossFit, give it a try for at least a month. You’ll LOVE it and the results. Make it a family event, and become stronger, more fit, and closer to one another as you accomplish goals you never thought were possible.
